Old Pulteney’s new line-up includes a 10-year-old single malt, a 2006 vintage and a 16-year-old, with new packaging designed ‘to evoke a contemporary and modern appeal’.
According to the distillery, located in Wick in the far north of the Highlands, each of the three new expressions ‘brings new flavours to the fore’.
The three whiskies are:
- Old Pulteney 10 Year Old: Matured in second-fill American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, 40% abv, £40 for a one-litre bottle
- Old Pulteney 2006: Retained from the previous travel retail range, matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon American oak barrels, non-chill-filtered with natural colour, 46% abv, £50 for a one-litre bottle
- Old Pulteney 16 Year Old: Matured in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels and finished in Spanish oak casks previously used for oloroso Sherry, non-chill-filtered with natural colour, 46% abv and £80 for a 70cl bottle.
Colour: pale gold.
On the nose: very heavy on the vanilla and toffee notes. Honey with citrus. Bright and zingy. Slightly herbal, green tea. Lemon curd. Creamy, too. Peaches.
In the mouth: a very nice oily spirit – what runs through the stills is clearly good – but the cask has barely had much influence. Olive oil, light citrus honey, mead and pears. Green tea. Malted milk biscuits. Lime marmalade. Black pepper and cinnamon towards the finish. There’s a lot of this sort of flavour about in Scotch whisky, but it’s very well expressed.
A little while ago, Old Pulteney announced a new core range, introducing a new 15 and 18 year old to replace to classic 17 and 21 year old expressions. As a big fan of the distillery’s whiskies, I can’t wait to try these new additions. However, for now I’ll have to settle for a slightly less new release.
The Old Pulteney 2006 Vintage was announced in 2017, originally as a travel retail exclusive, but it is now widely available, across Europe at least. Matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, there’s not much else to tell about this whisky.
