One of the first experiments with single malt to have been carried out in India, Amrut Distilleries’ MaQintosh Premium Whisky was birthed from Neelakanta Rao Jagdale’s ambition to produce a quality single malt in India. However, after its first release was in 1982, MaQintosh Premium Whiskey quickly was one of the first whisky brands in India to contain single malts produced in India. Product Description
This blended whisky from India’s Amrut Distillery combines the highly-regarded Amrut single malt with the distillery’s grain whiskies, and was produced to mark the distillery’s 25 years of whisky production. It carries no age statement, but given that Amrut bottles its single malts at around 5 years, it’s safe to say that this is a fairly young whisky.
The nose is malty and nutty with a good almond touch and notes of ginger, oak, allspice, and clove. However, the taste is spicy with clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger notes, along with touches of brown sugar and honey. The finish lingers with slowly fading spices.
The Amrut distillery came into existence in 1948 as Amrut Laboratories. Established by Shri J N Radhakrishna, the company started blending and bottling various alcoholic beverages. During the 1950s and 1960s, Amrut launched products for the Indian armed forces as well as the general market; products included the dark rum Amrut XXX and Silver Cup Brandy. During the 1970s, Amrut began marketing a grape brandy called Bejois, made from Bangalore blue grapes.
