5 Great American Whiskey Cocktails

Think Bourbon and Rye are just for boozy stirred down cocktails? Think again! Although they are good for those too….

In this episode of Behind the Bar I’m making some of my favourite whiskey cocktails with Aussie / American whiskey expert Fred Siggins.

We make The Toronto:

60ml whisky (Canadian Club 20yo)
15ml Fernet Branca
15ml sugar syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Lemon twist garnish

Prep your garnish. Add all ingredients to mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled and diluted. Strain in to chilled coupe, garnish and serve.

The Brooklyn:

50ml whiskey (Bulleit Rye)
20ml dry vermouth (Noilly Pratt)
7.5ml Picon
Amer
5-6ml (a bit more than a barspoon) Luxardo maraschino
Orange twist garnish

Prep your garnish. Add all ingredients to mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled and diluted. Strain in to chilled coupe, garnish and serve.

The Boulevardier:

40ml whiskey (Woodford Reserve)
20ml sweet vermouth (Dolin)

20ml Campari
Orange twist garnish

Prep your garnish. Add all ingredients to mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled and diluted. Strain over ice in glass, garnish and serve.

The Paper Plane:

20ml whiskey (Elijah Craig)
20ml Aperol
20ml Amaro Nonino (Amaro Montenegro works as well)
20ml lemon juice

Prep your garnish. Add all ingredients to shaker tin, fill smaller tin full of ice and shake until chilled and diluted. Double strain in to a chilled coupe, garnish and serve.

and The Scofflaw:

50ml whiskey (Wild Turkey Rye)
25ml dry vermouth (Noilly Pratt)
15ml lemon juice
10ml grenadine*
2 dashes orange bitters

Lemon twist garnish

Prep your garnish. Add all ingredients to shaker tin, fill smaller tin full of ice and shake until chilled and diluted. Double strain in to a chilled coupe, garnish and serve.

*grenadine- can be bought but to make at home simply bring equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar to the boil then reduce heat and allow to simmer until syrup consistency (around 10 mins). Adding a little pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water will help the depth of flavour.
